Ten Commandments for Swim Parents

(Adapted by Rose Snyder from Ed Cledaniel’s “Ten Commandments for Little League Parents”)

  1. Thou shall not impose your ambitions on thy child.

Remember that swimming is your child’s activity.  Improvements and progress occur at different rates for each individual.  Don’t judge your child’s progress based on other athletes and don’t push them based on what you think they should be doing. The nice thing about swimming is every person can strive to do his/her personal best.

  1. Thou shall be supportive no matter what.

There is only one question to ask your child:  “Did you have fun?”

  1. Thou shall not coach your child.

You have taken your child to a professional coach. Do not undermine that coach by trying to coach your child on the side. Your job is to support, love and hug your child.

  1. Thou shall only have positive things to say at a swim meet.

Only positive cheering and applauding are allowed. Never criticize your child, fellow team members or the coach.

  1. Thou shall acknowledge thy child’s fears.

At a swim meet, any race can be stressful. Do not yell, or belittle your swimmer. Instead provide your child comfort and help build his/ her confidence.

  1. Thou shall not criticize the officials.
  2. Honor thy child’s coach.

The bond between coach and swimmer is a special one, and is one that contributes to your child’s success.  Do not criticize or speak negatively about the coach in the presence of your child, or any swimmer.

  1. Thou shall not jump from team to team.

The water isn’t necessarily bluer at the other team’s pool. Every team has its own internal issues, even teams who build champions. Often, swimmers who do switch teams, never perform better than they did before they sought the bluer water.

  1. Thy child shall have goals besides winning.

Giving an honest effort regardless of the outcome is more important than winning. An Olympian once explained: “My goal was to set a world record. Well, I did that, but someone else did it too, just a little faster than I did.  I achieved my goal and I lost. This does not make me a failure, in fact, I am very proud of that swim.”

10.Thou shall not expect thy child to become an Olympian.

Swimming is much more than the Olympics! Swimming teaches self-discipline and sportsmanship; it provides life-long friendships and much more.  Most Olympians will tell you that these intangibles outweigh any medal they may have won.  Swimming builds good people and you should be happy that your child wants to participate.

Role of Parents in Swimming Success

  • ·BE SUPPORTIVE
  • ·AVOID CRITICISM OF THE COACH IN FRONT OF THE SWIMMER
  • ·LET THE COACH, COACH

·AVOID PRESSURING THE SWIMMER

·REMEMBER SWIMMING SHOULD BE FUN

“The swimmers I’ve had who have had the most success were unencumbered by parents calling the shots behind the scenes,” says John Collins, and Olympian coach. “These parents are very good about backing up their kids, but they are hands off when it comes to swimming business.”

Parents are not participants on their child’s team, but contribute to the success experienced by the child and his/her team. Parents serve as role models and their attitudes are often emulated by their children. Be aware of this and strive to be positive models.  Most importantly, show good sportsmanship at all times towards COACHES, OFFICIALS, OPPONENTS and TEAMMATES.

“Parents are the greatest influence on their children, even when it is in the athletic arena. Good parents, like good coaches, can make the sports experience one that is memorable and worth repeating,” Cathy Sellers USOC Coaching Manager

Sherwood Raider’s Swim Season:

Registration/ Parent Information Meeting

Meeting is held in early March. Parents complete all needed paperwork and pay fees.  Suits may be tried on and ordered at this time. Swim Team Coordinators and Team Coaches will be present for answering questions after meeting.  Parents will also sign up for volunteer positions.

Practices:

Attendance and participation in team practices is strongly recommended. Line-ups for dual meets and the city meet are based on participation at practices.

Indoor Practice:

Indoor swim practice will be held on Sunday afternoons at an indoor pool facility. This indoor practice is optional, but is strongly encouraged to help swimmers get an early start on training and strengthening before the outdoor season begins.

Regular Season:

Practices will begin at Sherwood in late May when the pool opens for the summer.  Team will be notified of exact date and times of practices by email and will be posted on the Swim Team bulletin board. Attending both practices is strongly encouraged, as morning practices generally focus on skill and technique and afternoon practices are more closely geared towards strengthening and endurance. (This holds true once the pool temperature rises and pool attendance increases, especially in the afternoons.)

Afternoon Practice:

Afternoon practices will be held throughout the season. Exact times of afternoon practice will be posted on the Swim Team bulletin board and will be emailed to emails provided at registration.

Morning Practice:

Our swimmers represent numerous different schools in the area; consequently we have a large number of swimmers out of school by late May. Morning practices will begin the week the first week of June.   Times of morning practice will be posted on the Swim Team bulletin board and will be emailed to emails provided at registration.

Time Trials:

Time trials are run similar to a meet and it is good time for swimmers to set a personal best time. The first time trial will be scheduled for a Saturday in early June. Look for the date to be posted on the Swim Team Bulletin Board. You will also receive emails in regards to these dates.  Warm-ups will be held 15 minutes prior to the start of the meet. If your child is unable to attend the time trial, please let the coaches know so that they can arrange a time to time your child. Swimmers must have a time on record prior to the first meet.

Movie Day:

On meet days we have Movie Day! When the team has an away meet, we will travel or meet at a local theatre to enjoy a movie. The movie chosen will be rated either G or PG. The movies typically begin between 11:45 and 1:00. All swimmers 10 and under attending the movie must be accompanied by an adult. The Sherwood Cinema Committee will choose the movie and notify the team of the location, time and other pertinent information. When the team has a home meet, the Sherwood Cinema Committee turns Sherwood’s clubhouse den/ TV room into a movie theatre!! The committee again selects an appropriate movie and will notify the team of the selection.  The viewing begins no later than 30 minutes after morning practice.  Popcorn and water will be provided for those swimmers attending. We ask that this be solely for the swim team.  Parents are welcome to stay or go.  The committee members will be present to supervise.  This fun day is a great team- building event and is a nice way to relax indoors before a lengthy evening meet.

Rules for Meets

It is a must that we have the cooperation of all swimmers, parents and spectators in order to provide ALL of our swimmers the opportunity to swim in meets. It takes a TEAM to run a meet: swimmers, parents, spectators and volunteers. We all have to work together in order to provide a safe, healthy, fun, experience for our children.

1.All spectators (including parents) who are not working in an assigned volunteer job MUST remain in the spectator area. Under no circumstances are any parents, at our pool or at an away pool to:

  1.
    1. Enter the Clerk of Course Area
    2. Stand behind or near the (diving) blocks,
    3. Speak to, interfere with or approach Stroke and Turn Judges
    4. Approach the scorer’s table
    5. Ask the Timers your child’s time
    6. Stand with the timers while they are timing your child.
    7.  Change, alter or interfere with the coaches’ decisions on stroke assignments, lane assignments or swimmers’ pink/blue cards, prior to or during a meet.
    8. Drink alcoholic beverages. Alcohol is NOT permitted at CSA swim meets.

2. The “Team” area is for swimmers only! Only volunteers working that area can remain in the team area. The parents in tent are the assigned “Tent Moms.”

Parents may come in and go out of the tent, briefly. We will be happy to assign this job to

anyone who wants to stay and help provided you sign up prior to the meet.

3. Swim Team members must stay in the team area. While in the tent or team area all swimmers are expected to have acceptable behavior. If a swimmer’s behavior becomes a problem, the swimmer and their parents may be asked to leave the meet. If a swimmer is not in the team area when line- ups are taking place the swimmer will miss the chance to swim his/her event as a swimmer cannot be added to the clerk of course nor can they be added directly into a lane.

4. The treatment of personnel or employees in an unacceptable manner is reason for restriction, suspension or expulsion from Sherwood. This will be strictly enforced.

5. If your child is sick and must leave the meet, you must notify the Head Coach before leaving.

6.Swimmers are not allowed to wear team attire from USA Swimming clubs on deck during CSA dual meets or the CSA Championship meet.

7. Swimwear worn in CSA dual meets and the CSA Championship Meet shall not cover the neck, extend past the shoulder, nor extend past the knee.

Swim for Cancer

Each year the CSA has its annual swim-a-thon with money raised going to the American

Cancer Society. Each year the Greensboro CSA leads the nation’s swim leagues in money earned for Swim for Cancer with more than $100,000 collected annually. Swimmers will receive an envelope/packet of information at the beginning of the outdoor season. Swimmers will obtain sponsors who agree to donate a specific amount, or an amount per lap. These laps will be swam at the designated “Swim for Cancer” night, which is held at Sherwood in late June. Coaches and parent volunteers record the number of laps each child swims. In addition to the lap swim, Sherwood holds an auction the night of Swim for Cancer.  We ask swimmers and their families to donate items that can be auctioned. A final way that swimmers can add to the total raised for Swim for Cancer is to donate baked goods, fresh fruit and other healthy snacks to our Bake Sale at our home meets. The committee chairs will be in contact with the team as these events near.

City Meet Championships

The City Meet is held at Lindley Pool at the end of the swim team season. This is the opportunity for swimmers to compete against other swimmers from all of the other pools in the league/city. Each team is allowed to send 3 of the fastest swimmers in each event. If a swimmer swims an event in City Meet Day 1 then that swimmer is not allowed to swim that event in City Meet Days 2-3. A swimmer may swim up to 3 individual events and 2 relays between City Meet Day 1 and City Meet Days 2-3. The coaching staff makes all decisions on meet entries. Coaches invest numerous hours in making swimmers’ entries and it is expected that their decisions will be respected. The coaching staff will post entries the week of City Meet.

Each team has a designated tent outside of the fence at Lindley Pool. When not swimming, swimmers need to be under the tent relaxing. It is the parents’ responsibility to monitor their swimmers. We prefer that swimmers have at least one parent with them while in the tent.

City Meet Day 1:

City Meet Day 1 championships are held on a Thursday starting in the morning. For every event, swimmers that place in the top 20 in their event receive a ribbon. Swimmers who finish in the top 10 earn points for their team as well. Swimmers and relays finishing in the top 3 in their events receive a medal.

City Meet Day 2 and Day 3:

City Meet Days 2 and 3 are the final days of the CSA season. This is held on Friday and

Saturday. Warm-ups begin each morning at either 7:00 or 7:30 AM. All swimmers in the morning preliminary heats need to be ready to warm up at that time. However, if a swimmer is only swimming in the relay, then that swimmer does not need to come to the morning warm-up, but should be there for the afternoon warm-up at the specified time. All swimmers will be told by the coach, prior to the City Meet, what time to report to our tent.   A team’s final score determines their placement in the league for next season.

Typically the meet ends each day at about 8:15PM.

After City Meet is complete on Saturday night there is a City Meet awards ceremony, which all swimmers should attend. At the very end, they announce the final places of City Meet. We want Sherwood to be represented well! So stick around after the final relays on Day 3.

Volunteering

Dual Meet Volunteer Opportunities

Announcer

At home meets, the parent volunteer announces the events and pertinent information for the swimmers and families. No training is necessary for this position

Clerk of Course

At dual meets, the clerk of course is in charge of the area where the Sherwood swimmers

wait before starting the race. This parent arranges the swimmers in their correct lane and makes

sure they line up behind the correct lane before a swim. Clerk of Course will be assisted by

Runners to lead and stay with each 6u heat. They also will keep ALL parents out of the Clerk of

Course Area. Before Home Meets, the Clerk (s) instructs and helps pool staff set the pool up for the home meet, organizes pink/blue cards, places cards for both teams on the clerk of course board in heats. The Clerk of Course is the machine behind the meet. Experience or a background in swimming is recommended.

Referee

At home dual meets, the referee is responsible for “running the meet.” The referee oversees that

the meet is run according to Community Swim Association (CSA) rules. This official has final say

on any questions that arise during the meet.

Attendance at a pre-season training session is required for this position

Ribbons

At practice the day after a meet, the ribbon writers are responsible for placing stickers on the

back of swimmer ribbons. The ribbon writers also file all ribbons in the Family Folders.

No training is necessary for this position

Runner

The runner is responsible for ensuring that all the timers have the correct time cards for each

heat, and each race, the cards are taken to the bucket, which is raised to the upper deck. The runner is also to report to the clerk of course and help organize the children in heat lines.

No training is necessary for this position

Scorer

At dual meets, the scorer is responsible for keeping a running total of the team’s score as the

meet progresses.

No training is necessary for this position

At home dual meets, the starter is the person who starts each race with Sherwood’s electronic

starting device.

Attendance at a pre-season training session is required for this position.

Stroke and Turn Judge

At dual meets the stroke and turn judge is responsible for determining whether

swimmers’ strokes and turns are correct and legal. If a swimmer is not swimming correctly, the judge indicates the swimmer’s mistake on a disqualification slip.

Attendance at a pre-season training session is required for this position.

Tent Parents/ Age Group Tent Parent

At dual meets, these parents help ensure that Sherwood swimmers stay in our

designated team area. These parents also assist the clerk of course in lining up and walking

the children to their event.

No training is necessary for this position

Timer

At dual meets and time trials, each lane is assigned three timers who record the swimmer’s time

on the designated time card. At time trials, our team is responsible for all 12

timers. At home dual meets, we are required to provide 12 timers: 2 per lane. We prefer to split timing into 2 shifts, allowing more people to get experience and to provide those timing a break. At away dual meets we will need 6 to 8 timers per shift, depending on the size of the pool. Sherwood provides the stopwatches. No training is necessary for this position

Hospitality

At home dual meets the hospitality volunteer sets up trays of drinks for the volunteers. This person may need to bring several trays from home. The hospitality volunteer will serve the volunteers working the meet; don’t forget the coaches and lifeguards on duty.

Floater

At dual meets, the floater provides relief to any volunteer position. The floater may fulfill untaken

volunteer positions.

Bake Sale Coordinator

At home dual meets, a bake sale is held as a way for our swimmers to earn money for Swim for Cancer. This volunteer organizes the donated items, logs the swimmers’ names and sells the goodies during our home meets.

Computer Time Data Entry

At all dual meets, swimmers’ times are entered into the computer program immediately following each heat
